The area was well known for its logging history, there were many woods camps for that along with sawmills and river drives on the Machias River. There were books written about some of the local legendary hunters and poachers as well, such as Wilber Day and George Magoon. The town has a wonderful little historical society based in the old Wesley Corner School on Rt 9.
