Sitting on the southeast corner of the second block of Main Street in Bennington is a historic 1888 Santa Fe train depot, in the front yard of a 1898 lumber yard. The original construction was Liedeigh and Havens lumber business, but the space has since served many functions, including, most recently, an event space and art studio. The lumber yard section still contains some original lumber from the yard operation. The authentic Santa Fe train depot was moved off the train tracks and placed in its current location in 2004. The space spans four city lots and all contents are to be transferred to the buyer. The seller states: “The lumber yard buildings contain an eclectic variety of building supplies, recycled lumber, hardware, and old doors and windows from Wagner’s sideline work as a house remodeler. Wooden trim from decades before; pine, oak, and maple flooring ( including part of an old gymnasium floor); dimensional lumber including some oak; leaded glass windows and old doors; cabinets and tools; old and new barn tin; plumbing and electrical supplies and other treasures. A 1948 chevy truck with hoist and bed are included with the property; some interior restoration work has already been done on the vehicle, and the six cylinder motor and the lift is good. The back yard is shaded by walnut, catalpa and oak trees, as is the front and south side. In 2015 red metal siding was installed on the exterior walls of the lumber yard, and red metal panels were put on the depot and studio roofs in 2021. Other contents include walnut and oak antique furniture, a gigantic red chair, folding chairs and tables, and stainless steel kitchen sinks. Kitchen cabinets are also of walnut and pine. Sound equipment like amps, PA boards and speakers are in one of the storage rooms behind the kitchen area, and antique couch and chair, unfinished repair projects, are in another storage room. Old suitcases, some with contents, are plentiful. More cabinets and a couple of antique glass showcases are in another part of the lumber yard, and one of the display cabinets holds a collection of dolls dressed as notable women of history.
