This home is one of the finest examples of Greek Revival domestic architecture in the state and is a significant example of the Greek Revival style. The original house was constructed in 1828-30. It was transformed in 1842 to its current Greek Revival style. The front porch is a three-sided porch gra...ced by 10 large fluted Doric columns. The entrance double door with both transom light and side lights is located in the center of the house. Directly above it is an identical entrance that opens onto a balcony. The home features a two story foyer, wide heart pine flooring, and 9', 11' and 13' ceilings. The second floor of the home contains four rooms with a central hall that is divided into a back hall and front hall. Three steps separate the two halls and the front bedrooms to accomodate the higher ceiling height of the front rooms on the first floor. There are elaborate stucco moldings on the ceilings of the entrance hall and living room. Doors and windows feature delicate wooden moldings. There are 10 fireplaces. The rooms average 18' square. In 1888, the kitchen, which was a separate building, was connected to the main body of the building by a passageway. Boxwoods lining the walk from the street date back to 1861. The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. It has been well maintained and in good structural condition. The home is well located 2 blocks from Court Sq. It has a rich history and is a landmark in LaGrange. The home is written up in "Pine Log and Greek Revival" by William Davidson, "Travels through Troup County" by John Lawrence, and "White Columns in Georgia" by Medora Field Perkerson. The property is composed of 2 Tracts. Tract 1, 407 W. Haralson and Tract 2, 206 Broad St. The seller will not sell the tracts separately. Tract 2 is protected by the Georgia Trust to retain the historic condition and to preserve and protect the property. More details are available to interested parties. Tract 1 which faces W. Haralson is not subject to the protective easement. This is a wonderful opportunity for restoration of a historic home which has been carefully maintained while retaining a high degree of its original character. It is an unspoiled example of the pure Greek Revival architecture of the South.
