Area Attractions San Juan National Forest The San Juan National Forest spreads out over 1.9 million acres in southwest Colorado. The forest mostly blankets the staggering San Juan Mountains. Chimney Rock National Monument The Chimney Rock National Monument is located 20 miles southwest of Pagosa Springs and consists of archaeological ruins from the Ancient Puebloan of Chaco Canyon. Several of the ruins date back to around 1000 AD. Mesa Verde National Park Mesa Verde National Park gives a glimpse into the past. The park protects the rich cultural heritage of twenty-six Pueblos and Tribes. The Ancestral Pueblo people constructed communities on the mesas and the cliffs of Mesa Verda for over 700 years. The area also sits at the center of the darkest skies remaining in the contiguous United States providing exceptional stargazing. Winter Recreation Purgatory Ski Resort The Purgatory Ski Resort is north of Durango, about a thirty-minute drive. With well-groomed runs, this ski resort offers winter fun for any ability. The 1,300 acres have a good mix of terrain. Wolf Creek Wolf Creek claims to be the snowiest ski area in Colorado with 550 inches of snow on average per year. The ski area was established and opened in 1939. Just 30 minutes north of Pagosa Springs, it has 77 trails and 1600 skiable acres.
