The Mountain is a 1,312 feet tall high glacially polished dome-shaped basalt bluff. Because this promontory is located in the heart of the Ottawa National Forest, the Civilian Conservation Corps erected a fire tower at the summit to watch over the forest lands below, but that was abandoned when the Forest Service started using airplanes to detect fires. It eventually deteriorated, and was removed in 1971, but the ruined concrete footings of the tower still remain. The mountain has a series of outcrops of bare igneous rock, which on the south side shows numerous 10,000 year old scars of glacier scour.
