Levitate Recording Studio has been operational since 2020 and was formerly the Groundwork Coffee House and music venue. Situated away from the distractions of the city, it provides a focused, creative environment for music production and content creation. The studio’s design was crafted by Aaron Crawford, Professor of Music Technology and Audio Engineering at Kansas City Kansas Community College. Acoustician John Brandt’s tools and Dolby Labs' design recommendations were utilized to optimize the control room's dimensions, maximizing space and ceiling height. Featuring a double-wall isolation design, inspired by Rod Gervais’ Home Recording Studio: Build It Like the Pros, the studio incorporates 6–8-inch air gaps, internal-facing insulation, and two layers of 5/8" drywall sealed with Green Glue for soundproofing. HVAC baffles are built into the walls to minimize noise transmission, ensuring negligible sound leakage and insulation from street noise. This design is implemented throughout, reducing sound transfer between rooms. The facility includes a control room (21’x17’x14’), a live room (24’x22.5’x14’), two isolation rooms (6’x8’x10’ and 6’x9’x10’), and a lobby. The live room features twelve custom-built 2’x4’ sound baffles made with fabric and rock wool for optimal sound absorption. Light flows freely between the control room, live room, and isolation rooms, creating an open atmosphere. The control room features a floating floor with a leveled riser and slanted front walls (6 degrees). A custom acoustic cloud with Wi-Fi-controlled RGB lighting and 4-inch rock wool panels enhances mixing acoustics. Double-glazed windows and sliding glass doors with ½-inch panels and 8-inch air gaps provide sound isolation and natural light flow between spaces. Levitate Recording Studio offers a professional, state-of-the-art setting for music lessons, recording, and video production, tailored for creativity and focus. It could also make a great art, yoga, studio.
